11 - Karma Kamelion
The next morning, I slept in but my dreams were active. I could not help but dream of Nyssa's childhood as seen through the eyes of her father, Tremas, who was now the Master. I really felt bad for what Nyssa had gone through in losing her father's mind to my father's. No one should be subjected to that sort of mental anguish.
Suddenly, though, everything turned white in my dream. I saw an old man, dressed in white, in front of me. He spoke only three words, "Protect the Doctor" before he faded from view. As he disappeared, I awoke and sat upright in the bed.
"Good morning," said Anne. She was already up, and had dressed in the outfit she had purchased with Tegan's recommendation. It was a business woman's outfit, with a dress and jacket. Anne had redone her hair into a more 'crimped' look, probably also at the insistence of Tegan. A thought crossed my mind, wondering what other ideas Miss Jovanka has put into Ms Bonny's head to surprise me later. I guessed I would just find out.
"What time is it?" I asked as I headed into the shower. I started it up and undressed, and stepped into it. It felt good after the night of planning and the warmth of yesterday. I began to wash my hair, and could not hear Anne's response.
Anne finally came into the bathroom and opened up the shower door, "Is telling the time what this thingie does?" She was holding a now unplugged clock. It was good it was unplugged, otherwise it would have caused a much bigger problem.
"Yes, that is a modern clock, ran by electricity. The cord you pulled out of the wall to bring that in here was its power source." Living with someone from a different time period does make things interesting sometimes. "What numbers were on it before you decided to bring it in here?"
"Oh!" exclaimed Anne. "It said one, zero, three, zero with these two little dots between the first zero and the three." She smiled a bit sheepishly, "I should not have brought it in here, right?"
"That's okay, hon," I smiled after washing away the soap. I grabbed a towel and started drying my hair. "Do you recall what time they said the hearing was for Nyssa today?"
Anne thought for a moment, "Ten am is what they said." She smiled as she took a step backwards from the tub to let me out, "How do you like the outfit? I would be burned at the stake as a witch if I wore such a thing in my day."
It took a moment for it to sink in, as I dried my hair. "Anne! We're late! Oh, I hope they had their usual delay and ran over time." I hurried out of the bathroom, Anne putting her hands on her hips.
"By the way, you look great in that outfit." I smiled as I quickly got dressed. When I came away from putting on my clothes, I looked in the mirror. I had selected a black velvet ensemble, and suddenly realized what it really was. It was Tremas's Keeper outfit. I'm sure that was going to go over like a lead brick to Nyssa, but I had no time to change it.
I grabbed Anne's hand and headed for the door. She was off-balance until we got to the elevator. "Why the hurry? Tegan said she would call us with the outcome."
"The outcome may well be the death of the Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan, and the rest of that courtroom," I said. I knew the plan of the Doctor was to appear in the courtroom as Nyssa's defense attorney. The plan was for Tegan to act as his associate. They would then see if they could get Nyssa off on a lack of evidence, or if they could not, to get another hearing the next day. The Doctor assured us he would not be attacked in the courtoom.
My dream said otherwise, however. That's why it had woken me up. The Doctor was in danger right now, and I had to get there as quickly as possible. "The Doctor was wrong. He's going to be attacked today. They aren't going to wait." I said rapidly to Anne as we raced out of the elevator to the front door.
"Who told you this?" Anne asked, as we slid to a stop at the taxi stand.
"I dreamt it."
"Wait. Who would warn you in a dream?" asked Anne. "Even better, why would they warn you? Why are you so key to this?"
"All very good questions which may never be answered," I replied. I opened up the taxi door and ushered Anne inside as I slid in next to her. "Courthouse, and please hurry as fast as you can. It is an emergency." I tossed a $100 bill into the seat in front of me, as I turned back to Anne. "I haven't a clue who that man was in my dream. Not even the memories of the Master mention anyone wearing all white, with the exception of the Doctor's current incarnation. Whomever it was, though, he told me to protect the Doctor."
I had not noticed our direction of travel until this point. We were heading the wrong way. In fact, we were on the path to the airport. The warning lights fired immediately in my head. I looked at our driver, "So, are you going to kill us as well?"
"That is not my intention, sir," replied the taxi driver. "In fact, I am adverse to killing unless ordered to do so. Unfortunately, that was my orders earlier and the wrong person was eliminated."
"Wait a moment," said Anne. "You are the assassin?"
"Regretably, yes I was. I was told to go to the door my target was staying behind and kill the man wearing the white jacket. I needed to do this while disguised as one of his companions." With those words, the man in the seat in front of us changed shape into that of Nyssa, then back to the taxi driver again.
"Remarkable," I admired. "You are a shapeshifter."
"Yes, I am." The driver turned the taxi and we started heading out of town. In fact, it was the same road we had dealt with before, with the attempted assassination of Sammy Davis, Jr.
"You know, I'm getting really tired of this road," said Anne.
"Do you have any more questions?" For an assassin, he was being very polite. Too polite, it seemed to me. In fact, I would compare it to whom I mentioned before, C3P0. Knowledge of a shapeshifting, but polite, innocent, and easily controlled robot came to mind. My knowledge of the fact the Master had used him before twice actually kind of irritated me.
"Well, since you are here, you cannot be the assassin today." I sat back a bit, motioning to Anne to sit back into the seat farther than me, so I could make a lunge if needed. "So, who are you working with, or for?"
"My partner is a reprogrammed Movellan. If I failed, I am ordered to distract any extra allies of my target while 'she' performs the second assassination attempt. The driver was keeping perfectly steady with his driving. It was another confirmation on who I was dealing with. My mind was now racing to remember where the control mechanism on him was located.
"As for whom has ordered the assassination, that information has been deleted from my memory banks due to my initial failure. I am sorry I cannot provide you any more information than that." The driver began to pull off on the side of the road. "It has been calculated you will be unable to walk back and reach the target in time to prevent the Movellan assassination."
He got out of the car as he stopped, and opened the door almost like a chauffeur or a butler to offer an out to Anne. Confused by all of this, Anne got out and I followed. I smiled and nodded to the robot, "It is no problem. I do understand it is just your current programming, Kamelion."
