13 - Courthouse Hijinks
Sirens could be heard approaching, as someone must have called in some backup. Since it was now broadcast over the police bands, the swarm of reporters would be showing up like pesky flies to get in the way. In other words, more people were about to get hurt. I, however, was more concerned with the Doctor, Nyssa, and Tegan. I tried opening the door to the courtroom, but it has been melted shut. Not being a burly sort, my shouldering attempt at the door was futile at best.
Luckily for me, the second security guard had arrived by now, along with the others. He was a big burly type, so he broke through the door a whole lot easier than myself. The Doctor was in front of the judge, Nyssa was in the witness box. The court prosecutor and her assistant were also standing. We had probably interrupted an argument or objection. Knowing the Doctor, whatever the subject was, it was the Doctor's fault. Only a few other people were in the room, including a guard who did not know about the panic happening outside.
The court stenographer, though, I knew immedately. She was no stenographer. She was the Movellan assassin. I shouted to the Doctor, "Get down!" It was also an order to Nyssa and Tegan. Anne and I took cover behind the benches as well, as the security guards both stood there, dumbfounded.
Now, compared to the Dalek slow stairclimber, or the Cyberman's stiff limb movements, the Movellans are lightning fast. The stenographer pulled another pistol from a hidden compartment somewhere and immediately began firing. To say all hell then broke loose is an understatement.
The first person hit, as the Doctor dove for the cover of the witness stand was the guard who had shouldered the door for me. Before the other guard could react, or anyone else behind me, the security guard fell backwards almost on top of me, the middle of his head burned through cleanly by the laser shot.
Anne dove to the other row of benches, and the four police officers followed her instinctively. This left me alone on my side of the benches. Tegan pushed over the desk somehow and had taken cover behind it. The prosecutor and her assistant, as well as the other guard, all stood dumbfounded by the action happening around them.
Since the standing guard was armed, the Movellan's focus turned to him. Her shot was not as clean as the first guard's, though it still hit the guard in the shoulder as he dived for the cover of the jury box. The two still standing were her next target, though the city prosecutor finally reacted. She dove in behind the desk Tegan had turned while her assistant was felled with two blasts of the weapon, burning two holes into his body. I assumed those two locations were where his twin hearts would have been located.
"Your life is over, Doctor." The Movellan moved to take a shot at the judge's bench, burning a hole through the wood. I could not see if she had hit anyone with her shot since the judge, the Doctor, and Nyssa were all back there. "You can make this hard, or make this easy. Your death has been ordered."
"In that case, I will choose hard," came the Doctor's voice from behind the bench. "But you should tell me who wants me dead?"
"I have been ordered not to provide that information." The Movellan was focusing on the desk. I had a sick feeling in my stomach that she probably was looking in the infrared, looking for the Doctor. I hoped his lower body temperature would protect him until she got adjusted. Unfortunately, this meant her next shot would probably hit either the judge or Nyssa as they were the next two warmest targets.
"Hey judge!" I yelled from out of my vantage point. In a moment, the Movellan was going to fire, but I needed her distracted for a moment. "Does this mean the charges are dropped?" I moved so I could see both the Movellan and Anne from my point of reference.
"Now wait just a moment," said the prosecutor. Okay, she was obviously not the cream of the crop in lawyers, or common sense at this point. "Whether that young lady is guilty or not has nothing to do with it." The prosecutor decided at this point to go for grabbing the court documents. I shook my head as I knew what was about to happen.
Predictably, the movement too close to the Movellan was too close for the robot's comfort. One laser blast later, and the prosecutor would try no more legal cases ever again. However, that momentary lapse allowed me to move closer without getting shot at, which now meant I was within range of a pretty daring, but stupid move, I had been pondering.
"Tegan! Toss me the Doctor's evidence!" I shouted. I hoped I knew what she meant, and she did. It was still on her side of the desk, thankfully. I reached over and took the pistol from the security guard. Luckily, none of the other officers had fired at this point, but were all pinned down with Anne. Three deaths today was enough for me. Even though I knew I was getting the same rush the Master did by killing, I knew mass murder was not in my future unless there was a major provocation.
"This has gone on long enough," said the assassin, as she leveled her pistol at the judge's bench. "I must kill the Doctor. I have been so ordered. I will obey my programming."
"Now Tegan!" I shouted. The Movellan turned at the new motion happening behind her, but this time it was a smaller target. Tegan had arced the throw just high enough for me to try this stunt. I dove for the weapon used by Kamelion earlier, and simultaneously tossed the security guard's pistol up in front of the weapon.
Sure enough to my expectations, the Movellan shot at the first moving target she saw, the security guard's pistol by the way she turned. The disintegrating pistol bought me enough time to grab the other weapon and land in the center aisle on my side. The expressionless Movellan tried to refocus her next shot but it was too late.
My shot could not have been better with the blaster pistol, shooting the Movellan's head clean off of her robotic body. Both pieces collapsed to the floor, followed by the clunk of the Movellan's formerly held weapon. Unfortunately, the weapon discharged, putting a hole right in front of Tegan's face through the desk.
Quite naturally, Tegan's scream could have alerted a city to a tornado. Knowing that scream intimately, the Doctor and Nyssa both jumped up from behind the desk. That lasted until Nyssa saw what had happened to the city prosecutor and her assistant, when her scream went off. The Doctor held out his arm to Nyssa so she could bury her head into him.
Both of them walked out from behind the bench, as the police surrounded the robotic assassin. The judge shakily stood up, and first noticed the severely wounded guard. "Over here. This man needs medical help," the judge said as he helped the guard to a chair. The guard was lucky in the fact the wound was cauterized, but he would probably lose an arm to the incident anyways.
I finally stopped breathing hard and stood up from my position, and almost immediately mugged by Anne, who held me tight. "Criminy, David. That worried me."
"Well, it was a gamble, that's for sure." I moved to where Tegan was still screaming and offered her a hand. She quieted down and took my hand to stand up, then, like Nyssa, buried her head into me, crying. Obviously, she was in such shock, she did not realize just who she was crying on at the moment, but I decided not to remind her right now.
Paramedics came in to assess the damage, and to remove the wounded guard and three dead people. The robot stayed on the floor, no one wanting to touch it. That is, until I walked up to it, with Tegan and Anne held by my arms. As I moved, so did the Doctor. He looked down at it, "Unfortunately, David has turned into a pretty good shot."
Anne looked at him, "Why do you mean 'unfortunate'?"
The Doctor shrugged, "His shot also destroyed the memory module. We cannot trace who reprogrammed the robot now." Then, the Doctor looked over behind the bench where the judge had reseated himself, and was being tended to by paramedics. The judge glanced at the Doctor and nodded to him, then scribbled something on the papers in front of him.
"Case dismissed," said the judge. "I don't know how I am going to explain exactly what happened here, but I can definitely see the young lady is not guilty of what she was accused." The judge sighed, "And it was definitely too bad we had to lose three more good people to prove it." He stood and headed back to his chambers with the paramedic following.
